Surrey Artists Open Studios – Keppel Nowson

Keppel Nowson is a painter, ceramicist, sculptor and member of West Street Potters based in Mid Holmwood. He will be opening his studio for visits on 7-8th June and 21-22nd June.

Kep’s work is largely inspired by the Futurists and the notion of movement. He also cites Modigliani as an inspiration, along with a variety of African artists whose work hugely influenced his style. His paintings often represent deconstructed forms, with figures and shapes assuming multiple positions to encapsulate a single being. A key part of his process revolves around revisiting previous pieces, to develop a concept further or to create something new altogether. Knowing when a project is done, however, is also key to his method, ‘you have to have a moment where you stop or you’ll ruin what you are trying to achieve’. ‘I use acrylic paints, printing techniques, ceramics, wood, stone and any material to hand to create pieces that reflect shapes and forms in nature and the human form. These can abstracted and literal’.
