‘Art inspired by Gardens’
‘Art inspired by Gardens’ is an exhibition of work by 7 artists and craftsmen to be held at Bury Court Barn from 2nd to 5th of October.
It is the result of more than a year’s work by the group, who work in a wide range of techniques and materials, from textiles to glass engraving, ceramics, sculpture, painting and wood engraving.
Alison Ellen designs hand knitwear, dyeing her wools in rich and varied colours, studying not only flower combinations but colours and textures in leaves and foliage, and the gentle softer range from terracotta to greys in local buildings.
Jonathan Garratt already has work represented at the Crafts Study Centre in Farnham, making both innovative ceramic plant containers and installations for gardens.
Anne Hayward has published a book on wood engraving, and her work reflects acutely observed form and texture in both gardens and the activities involved in gardening.
Richard Hayward makes sculptures in wood and stone which capture the stillness of animals and birds, and moments of human activity frozen in solid form.
Painting, prints and engraved glass are shown by Sally Scott who enjoys the sweep and pattern of landscape as well as details of colours and textures in the garden environment.
Tracey Sheppard’s glass engraving emerges from minutely observed detail, whether in plants studied to the finest tendril, or insects and birds. Her work is shown on small glass pieces as well as cathedral windows.
Painting on silk gives Liz Vonberg the chance to use vibrant colours, showing the riot of flower combinations contrasted with neat rows of allotment planting, all drawn fluidly in batik, making cards, scarves, hangings and screens.
All artists will be talking about their techniques and demonstrating their work each afternoon, and welcome discussion.
It is also a great opportunity to see the superb gardens at Bury Court which are owned by plantsman John Coke, designed by Piet Oudolf and Christopher Bradley Hole.
